My Jellyfish

,
I found this weeks tutorial incredibly helpful in establishing in my mind what I actually wanted to do and research for my project. Up until this point I had been struggling with the contrast between what I wanted to create with what I wanted to research and write a dissertation on.

Task
During class we were given the task of creating a 'jellyfish' of questions. The idea behind this is that if we wrote down all the questions we had we could begin to see trends and eliminate areas we weren't as interested in, whilst expanding on those we were.

My jellyfish turned into treasure map of ideas.

Gaining a better focus
From my jellyfish I realised that although I had thought my project would be focused around character design and style, I am actually far more interested in the entire image as a whole including composition and setting. The words that continually came up were;
  • Visual style,
  • Appeal,
  • Adaptation
 When I refer to adaptation I am not referring to the automatic assumption of adapting one medium to fit another (books characters to illustration for example), but about the adaptation of a visual style in order to suit a specific audience.

Previous Tasks
3.  Read: Get 'The Art of' books for 3D animation films to look at character designs.
4.  Write: Make notes of any trends in the visual style.
5.  Read/Make: Research different visual styles for 2D and 3D, pick one of each and design quick concept sketches for each.
8.  Write: Create a break down of my topic and possible routes it could take. Organise into small sections to make research more manageable.
10. Do: Arrange a meeting with one of the lecturers to further discuss my project.
