Archetypal World

,
One concern I had regarding the development of a visual style was the potential repetitiveness of drawing the the same character or environment several times. In order to resolve the issue I am making use of archetypal characters for inspiration. This will quickly and effectively enable me to create a wide variety, or 'world' of characters that I can draw inspiration from.

Example of a mythological Harpy.

Taking reference from this extensive list I have compiled a more manageable list of characters, with a brief character profile that I can refer back to at any stage in the development process.

Listed by importance/dominance of role:

Mother Nature

Nature: Good
Gender: Female
Age: Mature yet still beautiful
Role: Humanoid/God
Characteristics: Authoritative
Maiden

Nature:  Good
Gender: Female
Age: Late teens, early twenties
Role: Human
Characteristics: Innocent
Hunter

Nature:  Neutral
Gender: Male
Age: Late twenties
Role: Centaur
Characteristics: Brave
Trickster

Nature:  Evil
Gender: Female
Age:  Forties
Role: Harpy
Characteristics: Mischief maker, cunning, selfish.
Shapeshifter

Gender: Male
Age:  Thirties
Role: Werewolf
Characteristics: Changing role, personality.
Astronomer

Nature: Good
Gender: Male
Age: Forties
Role: Faun
Characteristics: Knowledgeable
Wise Old Man

Nature:  Good
Gender: Male
Age: Over One Hundred
Role: Human
Characteristics: Wise, mentor, skilled.
The Child

Nature:  Good
Gender: Female
Age:  Seven or Eight
Role: Human
Characteristics: Innocent

.
After creating my initial list I thought it would be interesting to combine mythological creatures both within the roles of some of the archetypes and as additional creatures in the world.
  • Deer
  • Pegasus
  • Unicorn
  • Phoenix
These characters will not hold high importance but will be used to accompany and compliment the other characters within my artwork.
