Updated design framework:

• Reference Material
• Key Components/Elements(optional)
• Composition 
• Colour Palette
•  Line (width, colour, texture, shape)
•  Shape (colour, texture)
• Texture 
• Shading and shadows 

When I refer to the key components this basically means having a more advanced plan of each element that I will use in the piece and how they work together. This step is only relevant if the image contains a lot of detail.
