Case Study (2 of 3): Mathieu Beaulieu

,
Mathieu Beaulieu is a full time freelance artist, having previously worked in the games and animation industries respectively. The following piece entitled 'Angry Man' is from his personal works yet this visual style is consistent throughout his other works.

Analysis of Piece using Current Framework and Aesthetic Concepts (Beardsley)

Media: Digital Painting
Medium: Digital
Composition:
Colour Palette: Varies depending on work, but generally has a small colour range in varied tones throughout. Limited areas of contrasting colour only.
Line: Darker shade of object elements, while entire object has darker shade. Example, Line inside the hand is darker skin tone while line separating character from background is much darker.
Shape: Strong, bold shapes. Over emphasized at times.
Texture: Minimal to no texture. Depth added instead through shadow.
Shading and shadows: Blunt, angular.

Unity: Making use of some of the elements previously discussed such and colour and shaping help the overall unity of this piece.
Complexity: Although this piece is not automatically complex on first appearance, I think the detailing within the character and the use of colour to draw the viewer to the centre of the image can adequately by considered enough complexity to fit this criteria.
Intensity: The emotion of the character within this scene adds intensity. However this is not the form of intensity Beardsley is referring to in his analysis. This piece does not contain the intensity dictated by his concepts however, I do not feel this take anything away from the overall image.
