Case Study (3 of 3): Joshua M. Smith

,

Joshua M. Smith, also known as Hydro74 is an illustrator who strives for "complexity and a fluid organic approach" within his works.

"A Illustration to me is something that tells a story with out words needed. It builds a bond with the viewer who will either get it, or find it horrible, yet, the interaction is what is desired when doing a piece. Some Illustrations are trend based iconic structures meant to embrace the masses to encourage sales, while others are explorations turned to symbolic ideas on paper or fabric. Illustration is something I find deep meaning in."

"I firmly believe in having set style tones, yet a sense of diversity to make any various project unique to the demands that are set forth."

Analysis of Piece using Current Framework and Aesthetic Concepts by Kant

Media: Digital Painting (Pen Tool?)
Medium: Digital
Composition:Complex. Overlapping elements and integration with one another.
Colour Palette:Very limited, mainly black and white with a tiny amount of blue and green.
Line: Varied in shape and size throughout. Often merges with the shape of the piece.
Shape: As above. Use of negative shape.
Texture: None.
Shading and shadows: Slight hint of shadow on teeth area. Solid. The illusion of shading and shadow is created through thin black lines in close proximity with fade.

Unity: Although this piece contains several different elements, it still retains an over arching sense of unity throughout.
Complexity: This piece definitely fits the criteria for Beardsley notion of complexity within art.

Freedom From Concept: This piece contains the presence of concept by the nature of it, meaning it does not and can not fit this criteria.
Objectivity: This piece does not fit this criteria.
Obligatoriness: This piece does not fit this criteria.
Disinterest (visual enjoyment without the desire to be possessed): Also possibly not in the direct sense that Kant refers to, I feel this piece does in fact contain disinterest.

By Kant's aesthetic concepts I feel it would be very difficult to justify any modern piece of digital art as truly aesthetically pleasing. However, there are certain elements that are relevant and I feel I can take these aspects of his theory and apply them within my own personal framework.
